The Mission of Family Promise of Gwinnett County is to mobilize communities of congregations that partner with social service agencies to end homelessness - one family at a time. Family Promise brings shelter, meals, and support services to families without homes through a cost-efficient, effective, and replicable community response to family homelessness. Family Promise serves families only; it does not serve individuals or couples without children. Family Promise trains volunteers as mentors to homeless families, organizes congregations to provide shelter, meals, and comprehensive support services to homeless families, promotes and supports the growth of new communities of congregations, and searches for adequate housing and support services for low-income families. In partnership with Family Promise of Gwinnett, congregations provide overnight lodging to our guests. Congregations usually convert religious education or meeting rooms into private or semi-private bedrooms for each family. A home-cooked dinner, sack lunches, and breakfast are provided every day. Access to shower and laundry facilities are also provided. A congregation hosts guests from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. for one week. On Sundays, guests move to a new congregation. Volunteers move guests’ belongings to the next host congregation. Family Promise of Gwinnett provides families with a Day Center to use as their “home base” during their stay. At the Day Center, guests work on self-sufficiency plans and meet with staff. Transportation to and from the Day Center and Host Congregations is provided every day. Westminster is a Family Promise host congregation, providing lodging, meals, and caring hospitality for homeless families 2-3 times a year. |
